DJI Osmo - Hand Held Stabilized 4K Video Camera

DJI is well known for their cutting edge technology in drones and is touted to be one of the drone and quadcopter leaders in the market. Last year they came out with a Ronin stabilizing rig that can be used with DSLRs and cine cameras. Taking a step forward in that direction, they have now also announced a new hand held motor stabilized 4K camera called the Osmo.

First revealed at CES in January as a prototype, it comes with a removable Zenmuse X3 camera that records in 4K at 30 fps. The camera has been enhanced to use with the new system, but users can also choose from DJI's X5 and X5R cameras, which have higher specifications and more features.

“With the Osmo, we have created a camera specifically designed to capture a smooth moving image regardless of filming conditions,” DJI’s CEO and founder Frank Wang said.

The device features a 3-axis motorized gimbal that can mechanically adjust the pitch, roll and yaw, which allows users to maintain a smooth, level shot. This can be done while holding it in your hand or while it is mounted on something. This feature even allows for long-exposure 12MP photos or time-lapse videos that are possible even without using a tripod.

The Osmo has the ability to perform motorized pans and tilts using the button controls featured on the handle. These controls are also used to change shooting modes, starting and stopping recording, and to take panoramic stills.

More advanced settings like that for camera and gimbal can be changed using the dedicated app. Users can mount their smartphone on the device and use it as a viewfinder and playback screen. Smartphones can also be used to remotely-control it from about 25 meters (82 ft).

The Osmo features a lithium-polymer battery that lasts for almost an hour on a single complete charge. It is also equipped with a built-in mic, though users also have the option of attaching an external mic into the provided 3.5-mm audio-in port.

The DJI Osmo can be bough for a price of US $649 and is available to ship in 10 to 15 business days. Optional accessories also include a bike mount, selfie stick and tripod.

Features in detail

Ergonomic Handle

The ergonomic handle on the Osmo gives users an easy grip and enhanced handheld operation. The handle features various buttons for changing settings and even has a joystick for panning and tilting the gimbal.

DJI GO App

The DJI GO app for iOS and Android allows users to remotely control the gimbal and view live feed. The camera and smartphone can be connected via Wi-Fi and it has a range of up to 85'. Advanced features can be altered using the app.

Detachable Mobile Device Holder

Using a rosette attachment lets users connect the included smartphone holder. This enables users to monitor their video feed and change important settings. It can also be disconnected easily to let other mounting accessories be attached.

The system is equipped with 3 motors that help stabilize the camera. The joystick or the app will allow users to pan it over a 320° range, tilt down 35°or tilt up 135°. It pans and tilts at 120° per second.

Panorama Mode

The Automatic Panorama mode makes taking 360° panoramas much easier by just holding the Osmo up above your head and pressing a button. The camera will automatically rotate and capture pictures while being completely stable.
