Meet The DJI Phantom 3 / Mavic Hybrid Drone

The DJI Phantom 3 and the DJI Mavic Pro are two separate quads. Although awesome in their own rights, a hybrid of the two is any drone pilot’s dream come true. And now, it is no longer just a pipe dream but a highly anticipated addition to the drone industry all thanks to a user from phantompilots.com

The user who goes by the name of cIJI has made his case from a financial point as well as the merits of combining the best of both drones. Why spend on both to enjoy their individual capabilities when you can spend on a hybrid? According to cIJI, the cost of buying a new Mavic is more than 5000 CNY, while for only 299 CNY and half an hour of your time you could make a Mavic from your Phantom 3.

How it Started

Midway through this December 2016, cIJI showed his step by step construction of the DJI Phantom /Mavic hybrid drone on phantompilots.com. He and his team started out by building 3D models of the hybrid drone using a dismantled Mavic's original measurements. They then modified the camera platform and built the phantom 3 a Mavic like foldable body. In some areas, they improved the existing features rather than built new ones. For example, they added a GPRS GPS which continues to work even when the standard DJI GO APP is unable to locate the drone. So you can never lose your drone.

Notable Changes

The main crux of cIJI's changes appears to be in the motors, propellers, cameras and centerboard. Although the team has adopted all of the above from the phantom 3, they have tweaked the power of the propellers among other things and the design is much larger than the Mavic's design. The result is a drone that performs as well as the phantom 3 in terms of speed at 48 kph (30 mph) and has the ability to hover for over 20 minutes before battery depletion. The original gimbal was not interfered with as it gave splendid footage.

The body is built from alloy and cIJI and his team has promised a myriad of colors for the DJI Phantom Mavic hybrid ranging from Chinese red to green. According to cIJI, he and his team have assembled the hybrid and taken it apart to enable them to design it better.

Avid followers are already hailing the creativity behind the drone while detractors are quick to point out that it is neither as good as the DJI Phantom 3 and DJI Mavic Pro nor is it able to live up to the potential of an expected hybrid of the two. The hybrid drone is set to retail for an affordable 299 RMB (roughly $43) although many think this price will not be viable for long in keeping with the demand and materials needed.
