GoPro CEO Reveals Hero 5 Release Date, Plan To Streamline Products, And New Software For Desktop

Since the GoPro Hero 5 release was pushed back, the upcoming release date for the Hero 5 has been under question. But finally, the company has made comments about this highly anticipated device at their recent earnings call for the 4th quarter of 2015.

In the transcript shared by Yahoo! Finance, Nicholas Woodman who is GoPro’s Chief Executive Officer disclosed that GoPro would be streamlining their gadget lineup soon. They are not going to sell the entry level Hero, Hero Plus, and Hero Plus LCD cameras from April onwards and will just focus on simplifying their range with the remaining Hero4 Session, Silver, and Black GoPro cameras.

Woodman also discussed the release date for the Karma drone to be in the first half of 2016, while the Hero 5 will be released in the second half of the year.

"In terms of doubling down in hardware, we are ensuring that any new and existing hardware products do a better job of connecting to smart phones and the cloud. Any advancements in software will be matched at the hardware level. Later this year, we will introduce the most connected and convenient GoPro we have ever made, Hero 5," Woodman said.

He also said that the new camera and all their other featured offerings will now have improved connectivity features. Users can get their new content management application for Desktop that will be releasing now in March 2016.

The app is supposed to make accessing and editing the media from the camera much simpler. It also uses tools that help sort through a lot of footage, and trim and share it straight to social media.

Though GoPro didn’t give away too much on this hardware, "I think as we get closer to the release of those products, we will be happy to give more color on it. But at this point, we are really focused on the strategy for the next couple of quarters, and then of course delivering the products that we're going to have out later in the year," GoPro Chief Financing Officer Jack Lazar added.

A specific date has still not been given for the GoPro Hero 5, but it will most likely come out in October 2016.
