The SJCAM SJ7 Star Action Camera is SJCAM’s first real 4k camera that records in true 4k and not interpolated. It was released along with the SJCAM SJ6 Legend Action Camera, which can record in 4k interpolated resolutions.
The 7G optical glass lens has a F/2.5 aperture, 166 degree wide-angle and f=3mm. This allows for taking clear and crisp images and footage, and combined with the gyro stabilization they are also smooth and not shaky. Videos have the following resolutions:
- 4K (2880 x 2160) – 30 fps (native)
- 2K (2560 x 1440) – 60 fps
- 1080p (1920 x 1080) – 120 / 60 / 30 fps
- 720p (1280 x 720) – 200 /120 / 60 / 30 fps
It uses the 1/2.” CMOS 12.40 MP (Sony IMX117) Sensor, which is the same one used in the GoPro Hero 4, and has an Ambarella A12S75 chipset to power the features. Pictures can be captured in the resolutions – 16M/ 14M/ 12M/ 8.3 M/ 5M/ 3M. The media can be stored on microSD cards with up to 32GB storage, but select cards of up to 128GB storage also work.
The SJCAM SJ6 Legend features a large 2” live-view touch LCD display at the back, with 240 x 320. This will allow you to frame your shots and playback what you’ve recorded. The camera works on a removable 1000mAh battery that provides a good battery life in spite of an LCD screen. It uses a sleek and sturdy waterproof case that allows it to dive underwater till 30 meters (90 feet).
You can manually set the ISO to 100/ 200/ 400/ 800/ 1600, and will also have the option to correct exposure: +-2.0 ~ +-0.3 EV. The Manual White Balance settings available are Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten and Fluorescent, while other recording and photo features include:
- Loop Recording - video length can be changed to 2, 3 or 5 minutes.
- Photo Mode - Single Shot, Self-timer and Continuous Shooting.
- Time-Lapse - Select intervals of 1s/ 2/ 5/ 10/ 30/ 60 seconds, and Video Time-lapse is also available.
- Burst Photo - 3 pictures per second in full resolution.
It features built-in Wi-Fi that can be used to connect with the compatible app, downloadable on iOS and Android. The body of the camera has a micro HDMI port for HD video output, and also a micro USB port for transferring files and charging.
Mike compatibility via the USB port makes recording audio much easier, while the ¼” standard photo tripod thread attached at the bottom allows for mounting the camera without any accessories to the standard camera gear. Users also have the option of buying the additional remote control, which is great for executing quick actions with just the press of a button!
